CX3 South Region-Old Town National City

The Old Town National City Communities of Excellence in Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Prevention (CX3) project represents the CX3 community engagement efforts in the South region of San Diego County.  The Old Town National City team started its CX3 efforts in 2012, building critical partnerships with local agencies and businesses best suited for each project.

The Old Town National City CX3 team has initiated and implemented a number of successful projects related to the following topics to improve nutrition, physical activity and obesity prevention in the community:

Walkability
Residents working with the South Region CX3 team worked to improve National City's walkability by enhancing the walkways and landscaping around Kimball Elementary School.

Healthy Corner Stores
In collaboration with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency South Region staff and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Center for Community Health staff, residents are working with store owners to consider corner store conversions. Corner store conversions build capacity of corner stores to source and sell fresh produce and other items to enhance a community's access to healthy food.

Resident Leadership Training
The CX3 team organized the National City Resident Leadership Academy (RLA), a program that trains and empowers community residents to make positive changes at the neighborhood level. A group of 18 community leaders graduated from the RLA, which was held from mid-May 2014 to late-June 2014 at Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center in National City.

Nutrition Education for Older Adults (Forthcoming)
During 2014 and 2015, the County of San Diego Aging & Independence Services (AIS) will lead a senior nutrition education course at the George H. Waters Nutrition Center in National City. CX3 staff in the South Region will provide support to implement curriculum.
